BLACK MADONNA
During the Middle Ages, hundreds of sanctuaries dedicated to Black Madonnas proliferated along the pilgrimage route of the Santiago de Compostela from France to Spain. Saints, kings, queens and untold millions of ordinary people flocked to the chapels of "La Vierge Noire" at places like Monsterrat, Rocamadour and Le Puy en Velay to seek healing, protection and blessing. In the past few decades, these icons have become re-discovered as powerful catalysts of psychological transformation.
Through history, myth, and music, and guided experiential writing practice, we will explore the Black Madonnas of Europe, as alchemical images that can connect us to our own depths. I have found it particularly rich to approach these powerful images from a cross cultural mythological and depth psychology perspective. What do they say to you in the depths of your own heart?
